Sharon Jones’ Dap-Kings bandmate Gabriel Roth says Jones was “blaming Trump” for a stroke she suffered on election night (Nov 8).
Sharon Jones, lead singer of Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, died at the age of 60 earlier this week (November 19).
The singer was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2013 but went into remission nine months later. However, at last year’s premiere of a film about her life, Miss Sharon Jones!, she revealed that the cancer had sadly returned.
Her website was updated on Friday (November 18) to include the message: “We are deeply saddened to announce that Sharon Jones has passed away after a heroic battle against pancreatic cancer. She was surrounded by her loved ones, including the Dap-Kings.”
Roth continued to describe her final days, describing how she continued to sing along to songs accompanied by the Dap-Kings. “She was just moaning at first, and then she was moaning in tune and then she started following chord changes and pretty soon she was humming ‘His Eye on the Sparrow’ with him,” Roth continued.
“We all just kept playing and singing with her, and little by little over the next couple of days she actually started moving her mouth and started singing lyrics. She just wanted to sing these gospel songs. Every time we’d stop, she’d just keep singing ‘Amazing Grace’, ‘Go Tell It On the Mountain’ and ‘This Little Light of Mine’. We just stayed with her and sang with her and played music with her.”
He added, “I mean, she was the strongest person any of us had ever known, and she just kept singing. She didn’t want to stop singing.”
